Lynden Miles is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychological Science at the University of Western Australia, a position he has held since July 2019. He is an experimental social psychologist whose research focuses on the dynamics of social interaction. Miles investigates the role of interpersonal synchrony in shaping social exchange, drawing from coordination dynamics to understand how alignment of actions and thoughts influences social success. His work explores the impact of interpersonal synchrony on social-cognitive functioning, the interplay between mental health and coordinated behaviour, and the role of synchronous action on group dynamics and teamwork. He also examines the role of mental imagery and emotion in social situations, including coordination of emotional experience and expression in interactions. Miles integrates complexity science with contemporary models of psychological functioning to situate psychology within a broader theoretical context.
Miles earned his BSc in Psychology in 1994, BA(Hons) in Psychology in 1995, MSc in Psychology in 1998, and PhD in Psychology in 2005 from the University of Canterbury, with his doctoral thesis titled "Smiles, Affordances, and Social Interaction." Prior to UWA, he held a permanent academic post at the School of Psychology, University of Aberdeen, following an RCUK Fellowship, and conducted a postdoctoral stint at the University of Canterbury. He has 62 research outputs, including key publications such as "The rhythm of rapport: interpersonal synchrony and social perception" (2009), "Moving through time" (2010), "Too late to coordinate: Contextual influences on behavioral synchrony" (2010), "Psychopathic traits alter facial expression of posed and spontaneous smiles, and associated emotional experience" (2026), and "Subclinical Variation in Mental Health Shapes the Dynamics of Everyday Behaviour" (2026). Awards include the RCUK Fellowship and the 2021 Cockell Research Collaboration Award. Current projects led by Miles encompass "Attention, Mental Health, and Interpersonal Coordination" (2023–2024).
