Lynne Hewitt, PhD, CCC-SLP, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Ithaca College, where she has served since January 2020. She earned a B.A. with distinction in all subjects, summa cum laude in linguistics and English, from Cornell University in 1980; an M.A. in Communicative Disorders and Sciences from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1987; and a Ph.D. in Communicative Disorders and Sciences from SUNY Buffalo in 1994. Her career includes Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Bowling Green State University from July 2009 to December 2019, Interim Chair from July 2008 to July 2009, and Graduate Coordinator from August 2004 to 2008. She advanced from Assistant Professor to Professor at Bowling Green State University from 1999 to 2019 and was Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at The Pennsylvania State University from August 1994 to June 1999. Additionally, she held Visiting Erskine Fellowships at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, teaching courses on language disorders in children and autism in 2008 and 2018. Hewitt teaches courses such as Phonetics, Language Disorders 3-21, Autism, Early Intervention, and Language Development in Children.
Her research focuses on language development and disorders in children, with emphasis on autism spectrum disorders, pragmatics of language, and social communication impairments. She has published numerous refereed articles, including "Perspectives of adults with autism on social communication intervention" (Santhanam & Hewitt, 2020, Communication Disorders Quarterly), "Narrative as a critical context for advanced language learning in ASD" (2019, SIG 1 Perspectives), "Assessment considerations for college students with autism spectrum disorders" (2015, Topics in Language Disorders), and "Evidence-based assessment and autism spectrum disorders: A scoping review" (Santhanam & Hewitt, 2015, Evidence-based Communication Assessment and Intervention). She co-edited Deixis in Narrative: A Cognitive Science Perspective (1995) and Pragmatics: From Theory to Practice (1994). Hewitt serves as editor for the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology and has been associate editor and reviewer for journals such as Journal of Speech-Language-Hearing Research and Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. In the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, she has chaired the Academic Affairs Board, coordinated Special Interest Group 1 on Language Learning and Education, and served as Topic Chair for Autism and Language in School-Age Populations. She was recognized as an ASHA Fellow in 2014.
