Lynne Slivovsky is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and the first Chair of the Computer Engineering Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She joined the Cal Poly faculty in 2003 following her academic training at Purdue University, where she earned a B.S. in Computer and Electrical Engineering in 1992, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1996, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 2001. During her time at Purdue, she contributed to research in the Human-Computer Interaction Remote Lab on projects including template-based recognition of static sitting postures. At Cal Poly, Slivovsky has advanced engineering education through service-learning and multidisciplinary design teams, as detailed in her publications such as "An Analysis of the Reflection Component in the EPICS Model of Service-Learning" (2004, ASEE) and "Evaluating Multidisciplinary Design Teams" (2003, ASEE). She has also explored RFID applications in computer engineering capstones (2006).
Slivovsky has advised numerous senior capstone projects and master's theses, including "Affine Region Tracking and Augmentation Using MSER Features" (2009), "The Bicycle-Powered Smartphone Charger" (2013), "Software Updates to a Multiple Autonomous Quadcopter Simulator" (2017), and "Automated Multi-Modal Search and Rescue Using Boosted Classifiers" (2013). Her leadership facilitated the transition of the Computer Engineering program to a department in 2022, enhancing student identity and industry support. She has contributed to NSF-funded initiatives, including grant EEC-1037652 for integrated course transfer and a $2 million award in 2024 for the "Breaking the Binary" project promoting equity in computer engineering, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota. In 2008, she received tenure and promotion. Additionally, Slivovsky leads the "Dive Beneath the Surface" program, partnering with the Biology Department to provide live-streamed marine science education to middle school students via underwater dives at the Cal Poly Pier.
