Prof. Mohammed Ali is a Professor and Chair of the Earth Science Department at Khalifa University. He holds a BSc (Honours) in Exploration Geology from Cardiff University, an MSc in Applied Geophysics from the University of Birmingham, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Wales, and a PhD in Marine Geophysics from the University of Oxford. Since 2015, he has served as Professor of Applied Geophysics at Khalifa University. Prior to this appointment, he held positions as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the Petroleum Institute.
His research focuses on the application of geophysics in monitoring, reservoir characterization, and modeling. Additional research interests include basin analysis, crustal studies, geothermal energy, mining, and carbon capture and storage. Specific areas encompass geophysical monitoring of reservoirs and CCS, passive microseismic methods, seismic modeling of fractured carbonate reservoirs, microgravimetric monitoring, seismic anisotropy, geohazards, tectonic evolution of northeastern Arabia and the Gulf of Aden, seismic stratigraphy, basin modeling, lithospheric flexure, gravity and magnetic modeling, seismic structural interpretation, hydrocarbon potential of northeastern Arabia and the Horn of Africa, mineral exploration of the Arabian Shield and Horn of Africa, and geothermal energy resources in the UAE. He teaches courses including Applied Geophysics, Introduction to Geology and Geophysics, Petroleum Systems, Reflection Seismology, Reservoir Geophysics, Sedimentary Basins Analysis, Seismic Interpretation in Petroleum Exploration and Production, and Structural Geology. He leads or collaborates on projects such as subsurface imaging through cosmic-ray muons and seismic, crustal and mantle properties of the Arabian Plate, evolution of Precambrian terranes of Somaliland and Yemen, high-resolution monitoring of seismicity in the Arabian Gulf, geothermal energy resources in the UAE, exploration of natural resources in the Horn of Africa, distribution and properties of Hormuz Salt in the UAE, and mapping active faults in offshore Fujairah.
