M. Usman is an Honorary Associate Professor and Associate Professor in Quantum Computing in the School of Physics, Faculty of Science, at the University of Melbourne. His primary research interest is computational quantum physics. In this role, he leads quantum computing research and education programs. He concurrently serves as Head of Quantum Systems and Senior Principal Staff Member at CSIRO's Data61. Usman maintains academic associations at the University of Melbourne, Monash University, and RMIT University. He previously held the position of Chair of Quantum Software Engineering at RMIT University. Usman earned his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 2010.

Usman's research specializations encompass quantum machine learning, quantum error correction, quantum simulation, and quantum software engineering. Key publications include "Variational quantum machine learning with quantum error detection," "Million-Atom Wave Function Simulations of a Single Donor Qubit Made in Silicon Utilizing Ion Implantation Technology," "Self-Adaptive Quantum Kernel Principal Component Analysis for Compact Readout of Chemiresistive Sensor Arrays," "QFOR: A Fidelity-aware Orchestrator for Quantum Computing Environments using Deep Reinforcement Learning," and "A scalable and fast artificial neural network syndrome decoder for surface codes."
