About Majid

Majid Afshar, MD, MS, is a tenured Associate Professor in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He received his MD and MS in Clinical Research from Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine, serving as Chief Resident, at Rush University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Maryland. Clinically, Dr. Afshar practices as an intensivist in the medical intensive care unit, treating patients with life-threatening conditions including sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and alcohol-related liver disease. He is affiliated with the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics and the Data Science Institute.

Dr. Afshar co-leads the Critical Care Data Science Lab for the Department of Medicine and directs the Learning Health System in the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. His research specializes in artificial intelligence and clinical translational natural language processing to advance prevention and early identification of diseases, leveraging predictive analytics and electronic health record data for screening and diagnosis in critically ill patients. He implements and evaluates AI models as real-time clinical decision support tools and addresses health disparities and bias in data-driven hospital tools, with recent work on substance misuse algorithms. With over 100 peer-reviewed publications cataloged in NCBI My Bibliography and more than 5,600 citations on Google Scholar, key works include "Evaluation and management of obesity hypoventilation syndrome. An official American Thoracic Society clinical practice guideline" (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2019), "The TRIPOD-LLM reporting guideline for studies using large language models" (Nature Medicine, 2025), and "Identifying novel sepsis subphenotypes using temperature trajectories" (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2019). A Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association, he has hosted national data challenges such as the National NLP Clinical Challenge and BioNLP Workshop, served as a chartered member of the NIH Digital Health and Clinical Informatics Study Section, co-chaired American Medical Informatics Association conferences, and mentored trainees to career development grants in data science. Dr. Afshar contributes to UW Health informatics leadership, pioneering real-time natural language processing pipelines and generative AI technologies in healthcare delivery.
