Professor Malcolm Jones is Professor of Parasitology in the School of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Science, at the University of Queensland, where he also serves as Director of Teaching and Learning. He earned a Bachelor of Science with Honours (Advanced) and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland in 1986, with his doctoral thesis titled 'The taxonomy, development, and biology of the Nematotaeniidae Lühe, 1910 (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea)'. His research specializations encompass the biology and control of helminth parasites affecting humans, with particular emphasis on schistosomiasis, food-borne trematodiases, and echinococcosis. Jones explores novel control strategies, including vaccine development, detailed studies of parasite biology and host-parasite interactions, and advanced diagnostic methods. He utilizes cutting-edge techniques such as electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, laser microdissection microscopy, and X-ray fluorescence microscopy to address complex biological challenges in parasitology.
Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Jones has held appointments at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Macquarie University, Queensland Health, and the University of Queensland, returning to QIMR Berghofer in 2023 as Honorary Group Leader of the Molecular Parasitology Laboratory following the passing of its founder, Professor Don McManus. He has authored over 290 scientific publications between 1985 and 2026, including the 2026 open-access textbook 'Principles of Disease: Parasitology' co-authored with Anne Beasley and Lyn Knott, as well as chapters in 'Manual of Clinical Microbiology' on trematodes (2019, 2022) and numerous articles in journals such as PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, One Health, and Trends in Parasitology. His contributions extend to editorial roles as Editor-in-Chief of One Health and former Deputy Editor of PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, leadership as President of the International Federation for Tropical Medicine, Past President and Fellow of the Australian Society for Parasitology, and life membership in the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases and the University of Queensland Veterinary Students Association. Jones co-chaired the XIX International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria in Brisbane in 2016 and has secured funding from NHMRC, ARC, and other sources for projects on parasitic diseases.
