Manfred A. Lange is a full professor at the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) of The Cyprus Institute in Nicosia, Cyprus, where he served as founding Director from September 2007 to September 2015. He also acted as Vice President for Research from April 2013 to October 2015 and Acting Director of the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center from May 2015 to September 2017. Lange earned his PhD in Geophysics from the University of Kiel, Germany, in 1980, followed by a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, USA. He then worked as staff scientist and glaciologist at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany. From 1992 to 1995, he was Director of the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland. Between 1995 and 2007, he held the position of full Professor in Geophysics at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany, and since 1998, Director of its Center for Environmental Research.
Currently, Lange directs the Future Earth MENA Regional Center and the MENA Regional Nodal Office for the Global Land Programme. He serves on the Steering Committee of the Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC) and as a member of the Facilitation Team for the Future Earth Water-Energy-Food Nexus Knowledge Action Network. His research focuses on climate change impacts, particularly water and energy security, renewable energy sources, and energy- and water-use efficiency in the built environment, building on earlier work in geophysics and glaciology. He has coordinated numerous European Union, European Science Foundation, and national research projects in Germany, Finland, and Cyprus. Key publications include 'Climate change and interconnected risks to sustainable development in the Mediterranean' (Nature Climate Change, 2018), 'Climate change and impacts in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East' (Climatic Change, 2012), 'Impact of climate change on the water resources of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region: Modeled 21st century changes and implications' (Water Resources Research, 2011), 'The ice thickness distribution across the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic Ocean in midwinter' (Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1987), and 'Development of sea ice in the Weddell Sea' (Annals of Glaciology, 1989).
