Rate My Professor Manoel Barral-Netto

Manoel Barral-Netto graduated in Medicine from the Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia at Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) in 1976 and earned a doctorate in Human Pathology from the same institution in 1988. He joined the UFBA faculty in 1984 and served as Professor Titular in the Faculdade de Medicina until his retirement. His research focuses on immunoparasitology, particularly the immunoregulation of Leishmania infections, with additional work on vaccines and related parasitic diseases. He completed advanced training in immunoparasitology at the National Institutes of Health Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases from 1979 to 1981 and a senior fellowship at the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute in 1991.

Barral-Netto is Pesquisador Titular at the Instituto Gonçalo Moniz, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz-Bahia). He previously held administrative roles including Pró-Reitor de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação at UFBA and Director of the Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia. He is a Titular Member of the Academia Brasileira de Ciências since 1998 and served as President of the Academia de Ciências da Bahia. His honors include elevation to Grã-Cruz of the Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico in 2018, the UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences in 2015, and the Premio OPAS-ALAI en Inmunologia Experimental in 2022. He has authored numerous publications in high-impact journals on topics including leishmanioses and immune responses to parasites.
