About Marc

Marc Facciotti is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Davis, within the College of Engineering. He earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis in 1997 and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley in 2002. His doctoral research, mentored by Dr. Robert Glaeser, involved structural investigations of light-driven ion pumping via X-ray crystallography of bacteriorhodopsin and the Asp85Ser mutant. Following a visiting postdoctoral fellowship at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from January to June 2003, he joined the UC Davis Department of Biomedical Engineering as an Assistant Professor in March 2008, achieving promotion to full Professor in July 2014. He holds affiliations with the UC Davis Genome Center and maintains an active laboratory focused on biological systems.

Facciotti's academic interests center on systems biology, gene regulation, genomics, and synthetic biology, with the Facciotti Lab exploring principles of biological organization to design and build novel systems. In education, he founded and directs the BioInnovation Lab, formerly the TEAM Molecular Prototyping and BioInnovation Lab, since 2014, and has served as principal investigator for the UC Davis iGEM team for over a decade. His innovative teaching approaches have garnered recognition through the 2010 Young Alumnus Award from the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, the 2022 Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching from the UC Davis College of Engineering, and the 2024 Marco Molinaro Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Community Engagement Award. Select publications encompass "General transcription factor specified global gene regulation in archaea" (PNAS, 2007), "Thermodynamically inspired classifier for molecular phenotypes of single cells" (Bioinformatics, 2014), "Conservation of an Ancient Oxidation Response That Controls Archaeal Epigenetic Traits Through Chromatin Protein Networks" (mSystems, 2019), "The Exploration of Novel Regulatory Relationships Drives Haloarchaeal Operon-Like Structural Dynamics over Short Evolutionary Distances" (Frontiers in Microbiology, 2020), and "Global gene expression analysis of the Myxococcus xanthus developmental time course" (Microbiology Spectrum, 2020). His scholarship has amassed over 5,185 citations on Google Scholar, influencing advancements in microbial genomics and synthetic biology.
