Marc Schenker is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Public Health Sciences and Medicine at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine. He earned a BA in pre-med from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969, an MD from the University of California, San Francisco in 1973, and an MPH in epidemiology and occupational health from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1980. Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and occupational medicine, Schenker completed residencies and fellowships in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine at Boston University Hospital, Tufts University, and Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by a fellowship in occupational medicine at Harvard. He joined UC Davis as an assistant professor of medicine and became director of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health in 1988, chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine in 1995, and founding director of the Western Center for Agricultural Health and Safety and the Migration and Health Research Center. With over 35 years of experience in medicine and public health research, teaching, and service, he has authored over 200 scientific manuscripts and five textbooks.
Schenker's research specializes in occupational and environmental health, with a focus on respiratory health hazards in agriculture, health outcomes of immigrant and migrant farmworkers, heat-related illnesses, pesticide and dust exposures, lung disease, and reproductive hazards. Key publications include 'Respiratory health hazards in agriculture' (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 1998), 'Migrant workers and their occupational health and safety' (Annual Review of Public Health, 2018), 'A global perspective of migration and occupational health' (American Journal of Industrial Medicine, 2010), and 'Pay, Power, and Health: HRI and the Agricultural Conundrum' (Labor Studies Journal, 2018). He received the Fulbright U.S. Scholar award for work in Colombia (2012-13), the Journal of Agromedicine 'Leader in the Field' award (2019), and UC Davis Health Dean's Award for Excellence in Research (2013). As principal investigator on projects like the California Heat Illness Prevention Study II, Schenker investigates causes of illness and injury among agricultural workers and collaborates with farmworkers, families, owners, and managers to address occupational health risks.
