Marcello La Rosa is an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne. He earned a PhD in Computer Science from Queensland University of Technology in 2009, with a dissertation titled 'Managing Variability in Process-Aware Information Systems,' and a five-year Laurea degree in Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 2005, graduating summa cum laude with 110/110. His career includes serving as Professor in the Information Systems discipline at Queensland University of Technology, where he led the BPM discipline (2016-2017) and was Academic Director for corporate engagements (2012-2017). At the University of Melbourne, he has occupied key leadership positions such as Leader of the BPM Team (2018-2023), Leader of the Information Systems Group (2018-2021), Deputy Head of School for Engagement (2018-2020), and Academic Director for Engagement (2018-2020). La Rosa co-founded Apromore Pty Ltd in 2019, a process mining platform spun out from the University of Melbourne, where he served as CEO; following its acquisition by Salesforce, he now holds the position of VP of Product.
La Rosa's research focuses on process mining and business process management, encompassing configurable workflow models, business process variability modeling, predictive business process monitoring, and process model discovery. He has authored over 150 papers and co-authored the textbook 'Fundamentals of Business Process Management' (Springer, 2013, second edition), utilized in over 250 universities worldwide and translated into six languages. Other significant works include the 'Process Mining Manifesto' (2011), 'Blockchains for Business Process Management - Challenges and Opportunities' (2018), and 'Predictive Business Process Monitoring with LSTM Neural Networks' (2017). His contributions have earned him recognition as the most cited Australian academic in Databases & Information Systems by The Australian (2020), ten research awards, and nearly AUD 30 million in research grants. He has taught process management and mining for nearly 20 years to thousands of practitioners and students and developed a MOOC series on business process management attracting over 25,000 participants.
