About Marcos

Marcos Domingos Siqueira Tavares is a Professor Associado 3 (Livre-Docente) at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo. He holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Santa Úrsula, a master's degree in Biological Sciences (Zoology) from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, a doctorate in Zoology from Université Pierre et Marie Curie and Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris, and completed postdoctoral research at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris.

His research focuses on systematic carcinology, with emphasis on phylogeny, biogeography, biodiversity, and marine benthos. He serves as Curator of the Crustacea and Marine Invertebrates collections and has held leadership positions at the Museu de Zoologia, including Director of the Scientific Division (2006–2009), Vice-Director (2010–2013), and Director (2014–2017). Tavares was named Correspondant du Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris in 1995 and Research Associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, in 2010. He is a level 1 researcher at CNPq and has served on advisory committees including the CNPq Zoology Advisory Committee and the National Wetlands Committee. Key publications include works on brachyuran crabs, paguroids, and ophiuroids, such as contributions in Zootaxa and PLoS One. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on crustacean systematics, arthropod evolution, taxonomy, and biogeography.
