About Margrit

Dr. Margrit Maggio serves as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Clinical Professor, and Director of Simulation Learning at the Workman School of Dental Medicine, High Point University. She earned a B.A. in Pre-Dental/Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where she graduated in 1987. With over 20 years as academic clinical faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, including roles as Assistant Professor of Restorative Dentistry, Director of Preclinical Dentistry, and Director of Advanced Simulation, and more than 30 years of clinical practice experience, Dr. Maggio provides strategic leadership for academic programs. She advances innovative simulation-based education to prepare students for clinical excellence, shaping curriculum and fostering hands-on experiential training aligned with transformational education principles.

Dr. Maggio's expertise encompasses haptics simulation in dentistry, restorative and operative dentistry, and practice readiness for dental students. A Fellow of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Leadership Institute (2013-2014), she contributes to enhancing preclinical dental skills through virtual reality and haptic technologies. Her recent scholarly contributions include co-authorship on publications such as 'Benefits and challenges of the integration of haptics-enhanced virtual reality simulators in preclinical dental education' (2025), 'Optimizing Preclinical Skill Assessment for Handpiece-Naïve Dental Students Using Haptic Feedback' (2025), 'Shaping the Future of Dentistry: How Digital VR-Haptic Thinkers Are Revolutionizing Dental Education' (2025), and 'Establishing the VR-haptic thinkers group' (2024). Previously at Penn Dental Medicine, she received teaching awards, including recognition in 2008, and an Alumni Award of Merit in 2018. Through her work, Dr. Maggio influences dental education by bridging simulation technologies with practical clinical training, promoting student success and innovation in the field.
