About Maria

Professor Maria Baghramian is the ERA Chair and Director of the Center for Ethics in Public Affairs (ETICA) at the American University of Armenia. Previously, she was Full Professor of American Philosophy at University College Dublin (UCD) School of Philosophy, where she joined in 1990 after completing her PhD in the philosophy of logic at Trinity College Dublin. She also holds a degree in Philosophy and Social Anthropology from Queen's University Belfast. During her tenure at UCD, she served twice as Head of the School of Philosophy, co-founded and co-directed the Postgraduate Programme in Cognitive Science, and helped establish the Center for Ethics in Public Life and the Center for the Study of Religions. She holds a Research Professor position in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Oslo.

Her research focuses on epistemology—including trust, expertise, relativism, pluralism, and truth—contemporary American philosophy (Putnam, Davidson, Rorty), and philosophy of science. She has authored and edited fifteen books and numerous articles, including Relativism (Routledge, 2019), Pluralism: The Philosophy and Politics of Diversity (2000), Modern Philosophy of Language (1999), Reading Putnam (Routledge, 2012), and The Many Faces of Relativism (Routledge, 2014). Notable funded projects include “When Experts Disagree” (WEXD, Irish Research Council, 2015-2018) with Luke Drury and PERITIA: Policy, Expertise, and Trust in Action (Horizon 2020, 2020-2023). She edited the International Journal of Philosophical Studies (2004-2014) and co-edited Contemporary Pragmatism (2016-2021).

Awards include election to the Royal Irish Academy (2010), Academia Europaea (2022), and International Institute of Philosophy (2021). She received a Fulbright Senior Fellowship (2014) and was Highly Commended in the Irish Research Council Researcher of the Year Awards (2022). She serves as Vice President of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies, founded the Society for Women in Philosophy in Ireland, and has organized over 40 international conferences, workshops, and public lectures.
