Professor Maria Chatzichristodoulou is the Professor of Performance and Digital Transformation and serves as Dean of Research and Knowledge Exchange at Chelsea, Camberwell and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts, University of the Arts London. A scholar in live art, digital arts, socially engaged practice, creative health, curation, and creative industries policy, she earned her PhD in Art and Computational Technologies from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2010, and a BA (Hons) in Theatre Studies with distinction from the University of Patras, Greece in 1996.
Her career spans academia and cultural practice. From 2020 to 2023, she was Associate Dean for Research, Business and Innovation at Kingston School of Art, Kingston University, leading REF 2021 submissions for four units, developing research institutes, and serving as Principal Investigator on the £1.3 million UKRI-funded Abundance Project tackling mental health inequalities. Previously at London South Bank University (2015-2020), she headed External Development and Enterprise, co-founded the Centre for Research in Digital Storymaking, and led the £1.4 million ERDF ACE IT project. At the University of Hull (2009-2015), she lectured in Theatre and Performance, directed postgraduate studies, and received five Innovation in Learning and Teaching awards. She has taught at Goldsmiths, Birkbeck, and Queen Mary, and as a practitioner, co-directed the Medi@terra Festival and Fournos Centre in Greece (1996-2002), curated exhibitions, and produced performances internationally. Chatzichristodoulou is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media. Notable publications include editing Intimacy Across Visceral and Digital Performance (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012) and Interfaces of Performance (Ashgate, 2009). She advises DRHA and Digital Interfaces conferences and has secured funding from AHRC, Innovate UK, Arts Council England, and more.
