About Maria Isabel

Maria Isabel Achatz, M.D., Ph.D., earned her medical degree from the Faculdade de Medicina do ABC in 2001. She completed a master's degree in oncology from the Fundação Antônio Prudente in 2006 and a doctorate in oncology from the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo in 2008. She also holds the title of specialist in medical genetics from the Associação Médica Brasileira, awarded in 2014.

Dr. Achatz has held key positions in oncogenetics, including director of the Department of Oncogenetics at the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center from 2005 to 2016 and principal investigator in the Clinical Genetics Branch at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, from 2016 to 2018. She currently serves as coordinator of the Cancer Genetics Unit at Hospital Sírio-Libanês. Her research and clinical work focus on hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes, including Li-Fraumeni syndrome and hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndromes. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and received awards such as the Director's Award from the NCI/NIH in 2018.
