Rate My Professor Marie Jankowska

Demonstrating her commitment to linguistic and cultural education, Jankowska began studying te reo Māori, the Māori language, in 2012 at the University of Otago and later completed advanced courses at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. In June 2018, she co-presented the paper 'Grammar and Native Speakers - Māori Language' at the Sociolinguistics Symposium 22 in Auckland, New Zealand. Collaborating with Poia Rewi from Te Tumu - School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies at the University of Otago, the presentation fell under the topic area of conversation analysis during session T8B3/P on Thursday from 08:00 to 09:30 in OGGB3. The work explored the concept of a native speaker in the Māori language context, notions of nativity, and grammatical patterns observed in speech by fluent Māori speakers, informed by empirical research. Furthermore, as co-founder of Aweko Limited, a Dunedin-based enterprise, she aids businesses in acquiring knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori protocols. Born in New Zealand with ancestral roots in Poland and the United Kingdom, Jankowska actively promotes the revitalisation of te reo Māori via heightened awareness, practical usage, and communal support.
