Mark Cirino is Professor of English and Melvin M. Peterson Endowed Chair in Literature at the University of Evansville, where he has served on the faculty since 2007. He chairs the Department of English and Creative Writing and earned his PhD from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and his bachelor's degree from New York University. Cirino's academic career centers on American literature, particularly the works of Ernest Hemingway. He holds the position of General Editor for Kent State University Press's "Reading Hemingway" series, for which he authored the volume Reading Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees in 2016 and co-edited Reading Hemingway's Winner Take Nothing in 2021 with Susan Vandagriff, a former University of Evansville student. Among his eight books as author or editor on American literature, notable titles include One True Sentence: Writers & Readers on Hemingway’s Art (2022, co-authored with Michael Von Cannon) and Hidden Hemingway: Inside the Ernest Hemingway Archives of Oak Park (2016), which received the gold medal in the Eric Hoffer Book Award and the Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY).
Cirino hosts the Ernest Hemingway Society-sponsored podcast, One True Podcast, and has co-directed the 16th biennial International Hemingway Conference held in Venice. He serves as a contributing editor for the Hemingway Letters Project. His scholarly impact is further evidenced by appointments such as literature consultant for a cinematic adaptation of Hemingway's work and receipt of the Sadelle and Sydney Berger Award for Faculty Scholarship, as well as a Global Scholars grant in 2012-2013 to research settings in Italy for Hemingway's novel Across the River and into the Trees. Through his editorial leadership, publications, and public engagement, Cirino has made significant contributions to Hemingway studies and American literary scholarship.
