About Mark

Professor Mark McEntee is the Professor of Diagnostic Radiography, Head of the Discipline of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy, and Chair of Radiography in the School of Medicine at University College Cork (UCC). He is also the Course Director for the MSc in Diagnostic Radiography (MScDR) and MSc in Radiation Therapy (MScRT), and serves as Vice Head for Teaching and Learning in the College of Medicine and Health. McEntee earned his BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography from Ulster University, PhD from University College Dublin, and Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning from the University of Sydney. He holds fellowships as a Fellow of the Irish Institute of Radiography and Radiation Therapy (FIIRRT) and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Additionally, he has honorary appointments as Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of South Denmark, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney.

Professor McEntee's research specializations encompass medical image perception, radiation dose optimisation in CT and X-ray examinations, breast density assessment and optimisation of breast cancer detection, diagnostic reference levels, image quality measurement, optimisation of soft copy displays, and the influence of ambient environment on radiological reporting. His work emphasizes patient-centred care, novel technologies for enhancing disease detection while minimizing patient risk. As one of the world’s top cited Medical Radiation Scientists with over 5,000 citations and more than 250 publications in premier radiological journals, his contributions have been presented at key international forums including the Radiological Society of North America, European Congress of Radiology, UK Radiological Congress, International Society of Optical Engineering, and Medical Imaging Perception Society. He has attracted $1.8 million in research funding. Notable awards include Australian University Teacher of the Year (2017), Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree Teaching (2014), Health Sciences Research Supervisor of the Year at the University of Sydney (2018), National Award for Excellence in University Teaching (2017), and UCC President's Award for Excellence in Teaching - Established Career Team Award (2024).
