Job Summary
The Assistant Professor within the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program is a full-time, 12-month faculty position responsible for providing didactic instruction, hands-on clinical supervision, and comprehensive evaluation of DMS students. In addition to programmatic responsibilities, this role includes teaching online courses for the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree. The Assistant Professor plays a Critical role in ensuring students develop competent sonographic skills, adhering to CAAHEP/JRC-DMS accreditation standards, engaging in departmental service, and delivering high-quality, accessible online education.
Nature of the work:
- Full-time instruction and supervision of diagnostic medical sonography students in didactic, laboratory, and clinical settings.
- Evaluation of student clinical competencies and diagnostic imaging quality.
- Instruction in sonographic procedures and online Health Sciences course modules utilizing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) frameworks.
- Academic advising and professional mentorship for Health Sciences students.
- Active participation in departmental, collegiate, and university-wide committees and student recruitment.
- Promoting effective patient/student communication and ethical clinical practices.
- Supporting student learning, clinical progression, and minimizing technical friction for online adult learners.
- Maintaining current professional credentials and knowledge of the professional discipline.
- Maintaining appropriate expertise and competencies through continuing professional development.
- Full-time teaching load of at least 15 credit hours per semester.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Program director, Chair of Health Sciences, and Dean of DCHP.

Responsibilities
The Assistant Professor of DMS/Health Sciences is responsible for delivering high-quality clinical instruction, online academic facilitation, and institutional service. This role includes:
- Delivering a full-time teaching load encompassing direct supervision of students during patient care activities and structured online coursework.
- Assessing student performance in clinical procedures, including sonographic techniques, patient care, and radiographic imaging parameters.
- Designing and implementing rubrics, structured assignment prompts, and practical case scenarios to rigorously evaluate technical competency.
- Aligning online Health Sciences learning objectives with Quality Matters (QM) review standards for all BS degree modules.
- Leading comprehensive curriculum mapping projects and updating topical outlines to reflect current healthcare industry standards.
- Ensuring accurate and complete documentation of student clinical activities in compliance with legal and programmatic (CAAHEP/JRC-DMS) standards.
- Maintaining posted office hours to assist students in achieving program competencies and learning outcomes.
- Participating in faculty meetings, calibration sessions, and the program Advisory Committee.
- Upholding program policies and procedures as well as safety and infection control standards.
- Engaging in ongoing scholarship and professional development relevant to diagnostic medical sonography and higher education.
Required Qualifications
Candidates for this position must meet the following qualifications:
- Minimum of a Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution (required to teach upper-division online Bachelor of Science courses and;
- Current, active national certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in the relevant learning concentrations; to meet CAAHEP standards and;
- At least two (2) years of full-time clinical diagnostic medical sonography experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates for this position are preferred to meet the following qualifications:
- Earned doctorate or terminal degree in a health-related or educational field.
- Previous full-time experience in didactic or clinical sonography education at the post-secondary level.
- Demonstrated experience with rubrics curriculum mapping, and online course development.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification for healthcare providers.

The Assistant Professor must demonstrate the qualifications and competencies necessary to guide students in clinical practice and online learning. Essential knowledge, skills, and attributes include:
- Proficiency in current diagnostic medical sonography clinical practices, including instrumentation and patient assessment.
- Deep understanding of CAAHEP/JRC-DMS accreditation standards, infection control protocols, HIPAA, and patient safety standards.
- Ability to provide supportive, constructive feedback to students using standardized grading criteria.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate clinical documentation and administrative workflows independently.
- Commitment to student success, accessibility, and ongoing professional development.
- Professional demeanor and the ability to model ethical behavior and academic integrity.

Organization
Albany State University is a four-year institution in southwest Georgia offering undergraduate and graduate liberal arts and professional degree programs, and a wide range of outreach programs to the community. Albany State University is located in Albany, a progressive city of 100,000, on a 206-acre campus featuring impressive new buildings. The school has gained a reputation as the "Unsinkable Albany State" after surviving two major floods.
Both traditional and non-traditional students make up the more than 4,000 students who attend Albany State. They come primarily from southwest and middle Georgia, Atlanta, other states in the U.S., and several foreign countries. The average student age is 24 and about 40 percent of the students live in on-campus housing.

A historically black institution, Albany State was founded in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute and supported by private religious organizations. It remained privately supported through 1917, when it began to receive state support and became the Georgia Normal and Agricultural College. It continued to grow and in 1932, when the Board of Regents was established, it became part of the University System of Georgia. The mission was expanded in 1943, and it became a four-year college and assumed the name Albany State College. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program and in 1996 its name was changed to Albany State University.
