Mark Parfitt is a Senior Lecturer and Major Lead for the Fine Art major in the Bachelor of Creative Arts at Curtin University, within the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry in the Faculty of Humanities. His academic background includes a BA (Social Science) from Edith Cowan University (1994), BA (Art) (2005), BA (Art) Honours (First Class) (2006), and MA (Visual Art) with Distinction (2007), all from Curtin University, and he is currently a PhD candidate in Fine Art at RMIT University, Melbourne. Parfitt's creative and research interests center on contemporary sculpture processes related to situated everyday experiences, producing site-specific installations, participatory works, documentation, and performances, often using domestic spaces to engage communities as co-producers.
Parfitt has exhibited extensively since 2005 in solo and group shows at venues including Gallery Central, Raleigh Street Projects, Free Range Gallery, Fremantle Arts Centre, Galerie Dusseldorf, PICA, John Curtin Gallery, and Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. His artworks are represented in prominent collections such as the John Curtin Art Gallery at Curtin University, State Library of Western Australia, Verge Gallery at University of Sydney, and City of Joondalup. He has secured major awards and funding, including the Arts U 15K Grant (Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, WA Government, 2020), Australia Council New Work Emerging Grant (2010), Janet Holmes à Court Artists' Grant (2010), Artsource Artspace Gunnery Residency (2009), and Galerie Düsseldorf Postgraduate Scholarship (2008). Residencies include Heathcote Cultural Precinct (2017), Paper Mountain (2014), and Artspace Sydney (2010). Publications feature artist pages in Column8 Artspace Sydney (2011), The Road Travelled (Artsource, 2011), and Dream Bore in The Weather Ring (2010). Parfitt has served as Chair of the City of South Perth Public Art Advisory Group until 2025 and Advisor to the Town of Victoria Park Arts Working Group, and is a member of National Association for Visual Arts and Artsource (Artists' Foundation of Western Australia).
