Professor Mark Stevenson is an epidemiologist and Professor of Urban Transport and Public Health at the University of Melbourne, where he directs the Transport, Health and Urban Systems Research Lab within the Melbourne School of Design. He holds a PhD with Distinction from the University of Western Australia, earned in 1995 for his thesis on the distribution and determinants of childhood pedestrian injuries in Perth, and a Master of Public Health from Curtin University. His academic career spans multiple institutions: he served as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Public Health at Curtin University from 1989 to 1995, Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Curtin in 1997, Associate Professor and Director of the Injury Research Centre at the University of Western Australia until 2003, Professor of Injury Prevention at the University of Sydney, Managing Director of the School of Population Health at the University of Western Australia from 2001 to 2003, Senior Director of Research and Development at The George Institute for Global Health from 2003 to 2010, and Director of the Monash University Accident Research Centre from 2010 to 2015. He has held National Health and Medical Research Council Research Fellowships from 2007 to 2022.
Stevenson's research specializations include urban transport and public health, epidemiological analysis, traffic safety, transport planning, road safety, urban health, injury epidemiology, air pollution, climate change impacts on health, and decarbonising transport. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, and Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. Notable awards include election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2022 and Lifetime Fellow of the Australasian College of Road Safety. Key publications feature 'Land use, transport, and population health: estimating the health benefits of compact cities' (The Lancet, 2016), 'City planning and population health: a global challenge' (The Lancet, 2016), 'A global analysis of urban design types and road transport injury' (The Lancet Planetary Health, 2019), and contributions to MJA-Lancet Countdown reports on health and climate change (2023, 2024). He serves as Associate Editor of Injury Prevention journal.
