Markus Mezger is Professor of Physics at the Faculty of Physics of Universität Wien, where he has held the Professur für Fluide an Grenzflächen in the group Dynamik Kondensierter Systeme since January 2021. He earned his Diplom in Physics from the University of Stuttgart between 1999 and 2004 and completed his doctorate in Physics at the University of Stuttgart and the Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung from 2004 to 2008. Mezger conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Chemical Engineering, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Materials Sciences Division, from 2008 to 2010. From 2010 to 2020 he served as group leader at the Max-Planck-Institut für Polymerforschung in Mainz, and he was Junior Professor of Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 2013 to 2019 before becoming Außerplanmäßiger Professor there in 2019.
Mezger’s research focuses on the structure and dynamics of soft matter using X-ray and neutron scattering methods, with particular emphasis on liquids at interfaces and in confined geometries. His projects include investigations of interfacial premelting in ice/clay nanocomposites and the structure of nanometer-thick liquid films under shear, employing synchrotron scattering techniques in the soft and hard X-ray range as well as time-resolved experiments and quasi-elastic neutron scattering. He has delivered numerous talks and presentations on these topics and maintains an active publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
