About Markus

Markus Reitzig, Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Chem. Dr., MBR, holds the Endowed Chair of Strategic Management and serves as Head of the Strategy Subject Area in the Department of Accounting, Innovation and Strategy, Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics, University of Vienna. Trained initially as a chemist, he received his Diplom-Chemiker (M.Sc. in chemistry, grade 'sehr gut') from Christian Albrechts University Kiel in 1998, including visiting studies at the University of California San Diego, and completed three years of law studies at Kiel and LUISS Rome. He then pursued business economics, earning a Master of Business Research with distinction in 2001 and a Dr. oec. publ. (PhD) in 2002 from Ludwig Maximilians University Munich, with a DAAD fellowship for dissertation research at UC Berkeley. Reitzig's career includes research associate at Munich (1998-2002), Assistant Professor at Copenhagen Business School (2002-2004), Associate Professor with tenure there (2004-2006), Visiting Associate Professor at Australian Graduate School of Management (2005), Assistant Professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship at London Business School (2006-2012), and his current endowed chair since 2012, plus visiting professorships at INSEAD Singapore (2014-) and Keio University Tokyo (2017).

Reitzig's research centers on strategic management of innovation, novel forms of organizing, non-hierarchical structures, and value appropriation from technology investments, including via intellectual property. Key publications include 'Corporate Hierarchy and Vertical Information Flow within the Firm – a Behavioral View' (Strategic Management Journal, 2015, with Maciejovsky), 'What’s “New” about New Forms of Organizing?' (Academy of Management Review, 2014, with Puranam and Alexy), 'Surrendering Control to Gain Advantage: Reconciling Openness and the Resource-based View of the Firm' (Strategic Management Journal, 2018, with Alexy, West, Klapper), and his 2022 book 'Get Better at Flatter – Shaping and Leading Organizations with Less Hierarchy'. His articles also appear in Organization Science, Research Policy, Harvard Business Review ('Patent Sharks', 2008, with Henkel), Sloan Management Review, and McKinsey Quarterly. With over 5,000 Google Scholar citations (h-index 32 as of recent data), his influence is evident in placements of former PhD students at Duke University, Copenhagen Business School, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Purdue University. Honors include the Tietgen Prize (2005), Bill Nobles Fellowship (2021), and finalist for European Research Council Consolidator Grant (2014). He is Contributing Editor for Strategy Science and serves on editorial boards of Strategic Management Journal (since 2013), Organization Science (2014-), and Journal of Organization Design (2015-). Reitzig has spoken at TEDx Kufstein (2016) and TEDx Vienna (2020), and advises Mercer Germany as organizational design expert.
