About Martin
Martin Anderson is a Lecturer in the School of Human Sciences, Faculty of Science, at the University of Western Australia, where he has served since 1989, initially as an Associate Lecturer before advancing to his current role. He holds a Master of Education (MEd) from the University of Western Australia. Prior to his academic career, Anderson worked as a secondary school teacher of Physical Education, Health, History, and Science in the Education Department of Victoria from 1985 to 1986. Over the years, he has developed expertise as a PE pedagogist, training up to 45 PE and Health teachers annually in schools and ultimately training over 800 teachers. His teaching responsibilities include coordinating and lecturing in units such as SSEH 1101 Tennis, SSEH 3337 and SSEH 3338 Practical Basis of PE Teaching, and PE 8764/474 PE in the Curriculum. He also supervises teaching practice, advises courses, and contributes to units focused on teacher education, teaching methodology, health and PE in the curriculum, sports-based practical units, recreation, and strength and conditioning.
Anderson's research interests include pedagogy, student confidence levels and experiences within postgraduate study, assessment and reporting in schools, after-school physical activity, and student perceptions of well-being. He has led projects such as the Assessment and Reporting in Schools project surveying Year 8-10 Health and PE teachers, served as a registered provider for the Australian Sports Commission’s After School Physical Activity Project, developed the UWA After-School Activity Program delivering a theoretical model for inactive children, and conducted studies on student well-being via weekly review processes. Key publications comprise "Prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness and its association with daily life factors in Japanese first-year university students" (2024, co-authored), "Do you believe PE is about keeping students 'busy, happy and good'?" (2009), "Stages of learning" (2009), "Top Tips for Teaching" (2007), and "Teachers' perceptions of outcomes-focused assessment and reporting in health and physical education in Western Australia secondary schools" (2006, co-authored), contributing to a total of 12 research outputs. Professionally, he chairs the Curriculum Council of Western Australia’s Physical Education syllabus committee (chair 2000, 2005, 2006; member since 1990), serves on the board of the Western Australian branch of the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) since 2000, represents schools on the Children’s Physical Activity Coalition since 1999, chairs the School's Teaching and Learning committee, and participates in groups like the Department of Education and Training outcomes-based education committee and the Physical Steps reference group.
