About Mary

Professor Mary Crock is Professor of Public Law at the Sydney Law School, University of Sydney, and a member of the Sydney Centre for International Law. She holds a BA (Hons), LLB (Hons), and PhD from the University of Melbourne, completing her PhD in 1994 on topics central to immigration and refugee law. Having worked in immigration and refugee law since 1985, she established Victoria's first community legal service specializing in the field in 1989, which continues as Refugee Legal in Melbourne. In 1995, she began teaching immigration law at the University of Sydney, where the subject had not previously been offered.

An Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law listed in Best Lawyers in Australia, Professor Crock integrates academic research with practical interests. Her expertise spans immigration, refugees, administrative law, human rights, and vulnerable migrants, particularly refugees and asylum seekers with disabilities. She has authored 15 books and over 80 book chapters and refereed articles. Key publications include Immigration and Refugee Law in Australia (1998), Future Seekers: Refugees and the Law in Australia (2002, with Ben Saul), Future Seekers II: Refugees and Irregular Migration in Australia (2006, with Ben Saul and Azadeh Dastyari), Immigration, Refugees and Forced Migration: Law, Policy and Practice in Australia (2011, with Laurie A. Berg), and the highly cited article "Comparing Immigration Policies: An Overview from the IMPALA Database" (2016, 225 citations). In 2015, she received the National Ethnic Disability Alliance Medal for her work on refugees with disabilities. Professor Crock's scholarship has profoundly influenced migration law scholarship and policy, challenging myths and promoting protections for marginalized groups. She works closely with her husband, Emeritus Professor Ron McCallum AO.
