Dr. Masoud Karami served as a Lecturer in the Department of Marketing within the Otago Business School at the University of Otago from 2020 to 2025. He earned a B.A. in Business Administration from Allameh Tabataba'i University in Iran, an M.S. in International Business from the Institute for Education and Research in Management and Planning in Iran, a PhD in Management-Marketing from the University of Tehran with a dissertation on Iranian modern and traditional cultural values influencing consumers' buying behaviours, and a second PhD in International Entrepreneurship from the University of Otago, investigating the entrepreneurial internationalisation of SMEs in New Zealand. Earlier in his career, Karami lectured part-time in Marketing-Management at the University of Tehran from 2008 to 2014 while working as a Sales Manager in the tools industry from 2010 to 2014, and then as Lecturer and Head of the Research Program at Queenstown Resort College from 2017 to 2020.
Karami's research specializations include entrepreneurial co-creation, effectuation theory, entrepreneurial opportunity development, international entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial marketing, and sustainability in small firms. His influential publications feature 'Entrepreneurial orientation and SME international performance: The mediating role of networking capability and experiential learning' (2019, International Small Business Journal, 434 citations), 'Co-creative entrepreneurship' (2021, Journal of Business Venturing, 142 citations), 'Effectuation and internationalisation: a review and agenda for future research' (2020, Small Business Economics, 130 citations), 'The impact of the interaction between an entrepreneurial marketing orientation and coopetition on business performance' (2021, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior & Research, 123 citations), and 'The effectual process of business model innovation for seizing opportunities in frontier markets' (2022). With over 2,000 citations across more than 50 publications in leading journals, his work has advanced understanding in entrepreneurship and marketing fields. Karami received the Best Paper Award at EAMSA 2025 and the Best Empirical Paper Award at USASBE 2022.
