Mathieu Bourbonnais is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences within the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. He serves as Co-director of the Centre for Wildfire Coexistence and Director of the Canadian Prescribed Fire Training Program. His research focuses on geographic information sciences, spatial analysis and statistics, movement ecology, and remote sensing. Bourbonnais holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Victoria (2018), an MSc in Geography from the University of Victoria (2013), a BSc Honours in Geography from the University of Victoria (2011), and a BA in Psychology with a minor in History from the University of Alberta (2005). Prior to his academic career, he worked for six years as a wildland firefighter with the Alberta Wildfire Service and Parks Canada. He joined UBC Okanagan in 2018 and teaches courses in geographic information sciences and spatial analysis.
