Dr. Matt Fencl is a Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County campus, where he has been a faculty member since 2011. He currently serves as Campus Manager in Provost and Academic Affairs Administration, Program Coordinator for the Master of Science in Sport Administration, Professor in Health and Human Performance Online Program, and Professor in the School of Education. Prior to these roles, he acted as athletic director at the campus. Fencl's academic background includes a Doctorate of Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Louisiana-Monroe, a Master of Science in Physical Education with an emphasis in Adventure Education and Outdoor Pursuits from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and School Health Education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. His expertise encompasses personal fitness, adventure education, and outdoor pursuits. He holds Exercise Physiology certification and Exercise in Medicine - Level II certification from the American College of Sports Medicine.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to teaching, Fencl received the 2022 James R. Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award from the UW System and Alliant Energy, which includes a $5,000 prize and honors his innovative approaches to course development, online curriculum conversion, and student-centered pedagogy across UW-Platteville's campuses. He has presented at the Wisconsin Health and Physical Education Association and published peer-reviewed articles in health and fitness journals, including 'Fun and Creative Unit Assessment Ideas for All Students in Physical Education' (2014, Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance) and 'Multicultural Games for Physical Education: Strategies' (2022, Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators). Fencl teaches various courses in the MSA program, collaborates on departmental improvements for student success, and promotes inclusive practices in physical education and sport administration, impacting student learning and professional development in these fields.
