Dr. Matt Huppatz is a Lecturer in Contemporary Art at the School of Art and Design, College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities, Adelaide University. He holds a PhD (Visual Arts—Major Project) from the University of South Australia, School of Art, Architecture and Design. Previously, he lectured in Contemporary Art at the University of South Australia, contributing to the Bachelor of Contemporary Art program and serving as a supervisor for Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) students in Contemporary Art. Huppatz is a multi-disciplinary artist working on Kaurna land in South Australia. His practice draws on mundane and altered experience, often through sculpture, assemblage, and photo media.
In his teaching role, Dr. Huppatz coordinates Studio: Project B (VISU-3016), a 12-unit undergraduate course owned by the School of Art and Design that requires students to develop and contextualise major artworks within contemporary art practice. He teaches The Sculptural Object as part of the Bachelor of Contemporary Art degree, Critical Literacies for Contemporary Art, and AAD Research Methods. He has developed lesson plans for interactive virtual classrooms aimed at building community amongst students and sharing preliminary visual and theoretical sources. Huppatz has contributed to university exhibitions, including IN-HOUSE where his Dream Machine 1 (2021) inverts the chandelier's historical connections to power, wealth, and spectacle by referencing Beat artist Brion Gysin's Dreamachine. He appears in SASA Gallery exhibitions alongside artists such as Aldo Iacobelli and Shaun Kirby, and is listed in Bloom (2020) and other gallery projects hosted by the university.
