Dr. Matthew Bird is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Monash University's Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (MADA), Melbourne, where he also maintains a distinguished practice as an architect and artist. His academic background includes a PhD in Architecture from RMIT University awarded in 2013 for the thesis "The House of Feathers: A Design Practice Observed, Documented and Represented," a five-year Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) from RMIT in 2005 titled "The Exoticus," and a Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) in 2000, also from RMIT. Bird's career at Monash, spanning research activity from 2008 to 2025, focuses on introducing students to speculative design practices, engaging in industry-led partnerships, and developing a robust research portfolio through his practice, Studiobird, established as an armature for experimental interdisciplinary work. Prior to his prominent role at Monash, he held positions at RMIT University.
Bird's research specializations encompass architecture, interior design, installation art, and scenography, informed by international artist residencies at the Centre de Création Chorégraphique in Luxembourg, the Herberger Institute for Design+Arts at Arizona State University, and the Arkitektskolen in Aarhus, Denmark. His interdisciplinary spatial practice—spanning sculpture, installation, scenography, photography, interior design, architecture, and site-specific interventions—has been showcased in commissioned works at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Festival, MONA, the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale, McClelland Gallery, and MPavilion. Bird has received major awards including a Green Room Award, an Australian Interior Design Award, an Australian Institute of Architects VIC Award, the 2015 Architecture Award for Small Project Architecture (with Mark Richardson), a commendation in the Australian Interior Design Awards 2015 for Retail Design (with Charity Edwards and Helen Evans), shortlisting in the 2022 INDE.Awards for The Design Studio (Studiobird), and an Honourable Mention in the 2024 INDE.Awards for The Learning Space ('Where Wonders Dwell'). Key creative outputs include "Future fossil" (2025, with Charity Edwards), "Double Edged" (2023), and "Dunes Rolling Down Dunes" (2023, with Jason Crow and Brendan Hurley). He has contributed to public discourse through lectures such as MPAVILION: Conversation (2020), The Bar Sessions: Matthew Bird in Conversation (2017), and The X-Hibitionists (2017). Bird's experimental approach has established his reputation for creating immersive, multifaceted worlds that traverse visual art, design, architecture, and performing arts.
