Dr Matthew Peters is a Lecturer in the School of Business within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Queensland. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Technology Sydney, which he completed while working full-time in industry. Prior to his academic career, Peters served as Group Financial Controller at GenesisCare in a tier-one private equity environment with CVC Worldwide, and as Group Strategy and Financial Controller for Major Change at Woolworths Limited. His professional experience also encompasses roles at Hewlett-Packard, AstraZeneca, Tyco International, and Gerling Global. Earlier, he founded and sold an indoor rock climbing gym business and a climbing wall manufacturing business.
Peters lectures and conducts research in management accounting, integrating innovative insights from sociology and strategic management literature. He has developed practical teaching materials, including interactive spreadsheeting exercises for calculative management accounting principles published in Issues in Accounting Education (2022), the solar panels business case (Issues in Accounting Education, 2022), and the frozen supply chain business case (Issues in Accounting Education, 2021). Notable publications include 'Interactive profit-planning systems and market turbulence: a dynamic capabilities perspective' in Long Range Planning (2019), 'Organizational improvisation and the reduced usefulness of performance measurement BI functionalities' in International Journal of Accounting Information Systems (2018), and 'Business intelligence systems use in performance measurement capabilities: Implications for enhanced competitive advantage' in International Journal of Accounting Information Systems (2016). In recognition of his teaching excellence, he received the 2022 UQ BEL Leading Teaching Award. Peters has secured research funding from the Institute of Management Accountants (2023), the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (2022-2023), and the UQ Knowledge Exchange & Translation Fund (2021-2022). His work has been presented at conferences such as the 2023 AFAANZ Conference and the European Accounting Association 2023 Conference.
