Matthew Reiter

Matthew T. Reiter is a Professor of Practice in Cornell University’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, part of the College of Engineering. He serves as the M.Eng. Program Director for the Structural Engineering concentration, having joined the faculty in July 2021. A licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and Structural Engineer (SE), Reiter brings extensive experience in structural design and management from his prior role as Architecture and Structural Engineering section manager in Cornell’s Facilities Engineering Department. He also worked as a project consultant with Thornton Tomasetti on bridges and buildings, encompassing new construction, rehabilitation, and structural repair projects.

Reiter earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering magna cum laude from Villanova University in 2001, a Master of Civil Engineering with a structural concentration from Villanova University in 2002—his thesis titled “Experimental Tests on Non-composite Cellular Steel Beams”—and a Master of Engineering Management from Cornell University in 2019. He teaches a variety of structural mechanics and design courses, demonstrating excellence across them by engaging students through short exercises and discussions, for which he received the 2024 Cornell Engineering Teaching Award. His research specializations include structural engineering, structural steel, masonry, structural mechanics and materials, and engineering management. Notable honors include selection as the 2025 American Institute of Steel Construction Innovator Scholar for a two-week residency at AISC headquarters to collaborate on structural steel projects; the 2020 Masonry Society Service Award; Cornell Facilities One Cornell Award (2020) and Cornerstone Award for Effectiveness Improvement (2019); and a nomination for the Cornell University President’s Award for Employee Excellence (2018). Reiter is a Faculty Fellow at the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability.
