Rate My Professor Matthew Weiler

Matthew Weiler is the Dean and Associate Professor in the Division of Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Physical Education at Victoria College in Victoria, Texas. He joined Victoria College in 2013 as a Geology instructor, advancing to his current dual role in administration and teaching. Weiler teaches a range of courses including physical geology, historical geology, environmental science, meteorology, and oceanography. His pedagogical approach focuses on hands-on, visual, and demonstrative methods, helping students understand the practical implications of geology in daily life, such as in home construction and groundwater management. Prior to his position at Victoria College, Weiler worked as a core technician at the North Dakota Geological Survey from 2011 to 2013, where he managed well cores, cataloged drill cuttings, and updated databases. He also served as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of North Dakota, leading field teams in the Hell Creek Formation, conducting sedimentological analyses, and instructing introductory geology courses. Earlier roles include summer physical science technician at Badlands National Park from 2006 to 2010, involving erosion studies, paleontological surveys, fossil excavation, and public education, as well as museum assistant at the Museum of Geology in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Weiler's research in geology and paleontology has resulted in several publications, including 'Context, naming, and formal designation of the Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation lectostratotype, Garfield County, Montana' (2014), 'Erosion Rates from Badlands National Park' (2011), and 'A Look at the Unique and Problematic Preservation Found with the Big Pig Dig Quarry Site, Conata Picnic Area, Badlands National Park, South Dakota' (2005, co-authored with Jennifer Cavin, Matthew Sheldon, Shawna Johnson, Allen Tate, and Carrie Herbel). He holds an M.S. degree. Weiler has been recognized for his teaching excellence with Victoria College's Distinguished Faculty Award in 2019, presented by the Victoria College Foundation for promoting effective instruction and student learning, and the Distinguished Teacher Award in 2009. As dean, he has contributed to community initiatives, such as curating and displaying a 100-piece gem and mineral collection at Victoria College in 2025, describing it as a state-of-the-art resource benefiting students and the community.
