Matthew Wysel is a Lecturer at the University of New England’s UNE Business School in Armidale. He earned his PhD in Economics and Computational Science from the University of New England, a Master of Technology Management focusing on International Business Strategy from the University of New South Wales, and a First Class Honours Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of New South Wales. Possessing more than 20 years of experience spanning Western Europe, North America, and Australasia in university and commercial settings, Wysel has managed global operations for an industrial research and development company that supplied visualization technology to the mining, oil and gas, aerospace, and fast-moving consumer goods sectors. He has instructed neurosurgeons, spinal surgeons, and ENT surgeons on operating with greater efficiency and safety using surgical guidance technology; developed a satellite refueling system with NASA on their Zero Gravity ‘Vomit Comet’; and designed military aircraft for Lockheed Martin and the Boeing Company. As co-Founder of MadeWithData, a full-service data agency, he delivers AI transformation, data strategy, and digital uplift services to educators, professional services firms, and primary industries.
His research interests encompass economic optimisation of data-sharing platforms, regional entrepreneurship, and technology commercialisation. Wysel serves as an HDR supervisor and teaches units including Change Management, Innovation in Business, and Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship, with expertise in management information systems, data management, software project management, and technology operationalisation. Notable publications include the peer-reviewed journal article “Data sharing platforms: How value is created from agricultural data” (Agricultural Systems, 193, 103241, 2021) co-authored with D. Baker and W. Billingsley, and “China’s social credit system: How robust is the human rights critique?” (Research in Ethical Issues in Organisations, 2021) with S. Burgess. He has delivered conference papers such as “Investment in Agri-Food Digital Transformation: Avoiding the technical fallacy” at the 65th Annual Conference of the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (2021), and “Data Sharing Platforms in Agribusiness” at the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association conference (2021). Additionally, Wysel consults for blue-chip companies, SMEs, and startups, designing enterprise and bespoke information systems, commercialising proprietary technology, and streamlining operations with productivity solutions.
