Professor Matti Rossi is a Professor of Information Systems at Aalto University School of Business and Head of the Department of Information and Service Management. He earned his Master's degree in Business and Economics in 1994, Licentiate degree in 1996, and PhD in 1998 from the University of Jyväskylä. Rossi has held several prestigious visiting positions, including research fellow at Erasmus University Rotterdam, visiting assistant professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta, visiting researcher at Claremont Graduate University, and visiting scholar at NYU Stern School of Business. Since 2010, he has been a professor at Aalto University School of Business, contributing extensively to information systems research and education.
A key leader in the field, Rossi served as the 23rd President of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) from 2017 to 2018, during which he expanded the AIS eLibrary, integrated the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) as a regional conference, and enhanced global member services. He received the AIS Fellow Award in 2020 for outstanding contributions in research, teaching, and service, and the AIS Impact Award in 2024 alongside his team for the MetaEdit tool stemming from the MetaPHOR project, noted for its technological and entrepreneurial impact in domain-specific modeling. In 2013, he was awarded the Millennium Distinction Award by the Technology Academy of Finland for advancements in open source and data research. His research focuses on information systems, product development, digital economy, design research, and open data, with 194 outputs including 57 journal articles, 83 conference papers, and 17 book chapters, amassing over 11,000 citations. Key publications include 'Blockchain Technology in Business and Information Systems Research' (2017, cited over 800 times), 'The Design Science Research Process: A Model for Producing and Presenting Information Systems Research' (2006), 'Advancing Next-Generation Multimethod Research in Information Systems: A Framework and Some Recommendations for Authors and Evaluators' (2025), and 'Gatekeepers in an Open Market? The Case of Contemporary NFT Marketplaces' (2026). Rossi serves as senior editor for the Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS) and Database for Advances in Information Systems, and past editor for Communications of the Association for Information Systems. He leads multiple research projects funded by Business Finland and the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.
