Dr Maxim Ananyev is a Senior Research Fellow at the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research in the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and an M.S. in Statistics from the University of California, Los Angeles, an M.A. in Economics from the New Economic School in Moscow, and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Physics from Novosibirsk State University. His research interests include applied microeconomics, public economics, political economy, and data science, with particular emphasis on causal inference, machine learning, and panel data analysis. He previously held a Lecturer position at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Ananyev has published articles in peer-reviewed journals including World Development, Journal of Comparative Economics, European Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Journal of Population Economics, and The Economic Journal. He has received the University of Melbourne Faculty of Business and Economics Dean’s Award for Research and Partnership in 2021, along with grants such as the University of Melbourne Early Career Researcher Grant. He contributes to policy reports on topics including earnings shocks, poverty measurement, and financial stress, and participates in engaged projects involving synthetic control methods and data analysis training.
