Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam is the Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University, appointed for a four-year term by the President and Chancellor Mohammed Shahabuddin under section 31(1) of the Private University Act 2010. He previously served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the same university. His career reflects substantial contributions to fisheries research and academic leadership in Bangladesh.
Alam began his professional career in 1983 at the Directorate of Fisheries. In 1985, he joined the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) as a Scientific Officer, advancing to Principal Scientific Officer in 2005, Chief Scientific Officer in 2012, and Director (Research) in 2015. He retired from BFRI on January 31, 2020, after approximately 27 years of service. In 2011, he was appointed Professor at Gazipur Agricultural University, where he held positions such as Dean of the Faculty, Head of Departments, and Director of International Affairs. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to fisheries research and technology generation, he received the National Award in 2009. Professor Alam has published over 103 papers in national and international journals, impacting the academic field of fisheries science.
