Melissa Calhoun is a distinguished faculty member in Health Science at Tarrant County College, specializing in the Dental Hygiene program at the Northeast Campus Health Science Center in Hurst, Texas. As a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) with a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene (MSDH), she graduated from Pensacola State College's dental hygiene program with an Associate of Applied Science degree in 2005. Following 14 years of clinical practice, she pursued advanced education, earning her Bachelor of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene from St. Petersburg College and her master's degree with an education focus from MCPHS University in 2021. Calhoun brings over two decades of hands-on clinical experience in general dentistry, pediatrics, implants, and various areas of dental hygiene to her instructional role. In her academic career, Calhoun has held appointments as an instructor of dental hygiene at Tarrant County College since at least 2022, contributing to student training in essential skills and knowledge for the profession. She also serves as faculty at Sanders Board Preparatory, where she specializes in teaching Oral Radiology, Provision of Patient Care, Dental Anatomy and Materials, Histology, and Embryology, and leads National Dental Hygiene Board Examination reviews. Beyond academia, she is an educator and key opinion leader for Arm & Hammer Oral Care Professionals, a Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) trainer with EMS Dental, and a trainer with the Swiss Dental Academy. Calhoun has authored the article 'Protecting expectant smiles: Safe, effective dental care throughout pregnancy' published in RDH Magazine, highlighting her expertise in maternal oral health. She instructs the Pregnancy & Infant Oral Health module in the Oral Systemic Educator Certificate Program for registered dental hygienists. As President-Elect of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene, she holds a leadership position influencing the direction of the field.
