Professor Melitta Hogarth is a Kamilaroi woman serving as Professor of Indigenous Education, Associate Dean (Indigenous), and Principal Research Fellow in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne. Prior to academia, she taught for nearly 20 years in Queensland secondary schools. Her academic background includes a PhD (2018) from Queensland University of Technology with the thesis "Addressing the rights of Indigenous peoples in education: A critical analysis of Indigenous education policy," which won the Ray Debus Award for Doctoral Research in Education and multiple other awards, as well as a Master's by Research from the same institution. She previously held positions at Queensland University of Technology and University of Southern Queensland.
Hogarth directs Ngarrngga, an Indigenous-led signature project at the University of Melbourne collaborating with the Indigenous Studies Unit and Indigenous Knowledge Institute to provide free, high-quality curriculum resources and professional development modules for Foundation to Year 10 educators, connecting students with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems, histories, and cultures. Her research focuses on Indigenous education policy and discourse, initial teacher education, equity, and social justice. Notable publications include "Talkin’ bout a revolution: the call for transformation and reform in Indigenous education" (2018), "One step forward, two steps back: The historical and social context of Indigenous education policy" (2018), "Ngarrngga: an approach to Indigenous education for all Australians" (2025), and "The Power of Words: Bias and Assumptions in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan" (2017). She contributes to public lectures, committee roles, and editorial work, and leads initiatives like the *65,000 Years* exhibition and the Truth-telling and Reparative Pedagogies Lab. In 2025, she received the Distinguished Australian First Nations Creative Leadership Award from the Deans and Directors of Creative Arts for her leadership in truth-telling and curriculum transformation.
