Mia L. McIver is a lecturer in the field of Literature at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she has taught writing and literature in the Writing Programs since 2014. She received her Ph.D. in English literature from the University of California, Irvine, during which she held the Krieger Fellowship in Critical Theory. McIver's research examines nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature’s engagement with legal and political theory. Her teaching encompasses writing, rhetoric, and research methods across specialized courses on James Joyce, World War I literature and culture, the concept of voice, historical fiction, manifestos, U.S. intellectual history, and the mythos of the California dream. She contributes to UCLA initiatives such as the EPIC Program.
Prior to UCLA, McIver taught in the English departments at Loyola Marymount University, UC Irvine, and Boston University. In 2016-17, she was awarded a Unit 18 professional development award by UCLA to support her pedagogical projects and discipline-relevant activities. McIver co-authored the article "A New Deal for College Teachers and Teaching" in Academe (Spring 2021), addressing faculty equity in higher education. Her leadership in academic labor includes serving as President of UC-AFT, the union for non-tenure-track faculty at the University of California, where she advanced negotiations for improved working conditions. In 2025, she was named Executive Director of the American Association of University Professors, leveraging her faculty experience to influence national higher education policy.
