Rate My Professor Michael Bloomberg

Bloomberg's transformative contributions include $350 million in 2013 to establish the Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships program, recruiting over 60 interdisciplinary scholars to address complex societal challenges. In 2016, he provided $300 million for the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, focusing on obesity, addiction, violence, environmental health, and adolescent well-being. Additional gifts encompass $1.8 billion in 2018 for need-blind undergraduate financial aid, support for the Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative in 2021, and funding for COVID-19 response efforts, including contact tracing training. These efforts have enabled programs like the Sommer Scholars, a global network of over 300 recipients, and the 2023 opening of the Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, DC, housing departments on health policy, gun violence solutions, and health security. Globally, as WHO Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries since 2016 and UN Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, Bloomberg has driven initiatives such as $1 billion for tobacco control in 2007, estimated to save 35 million lives, and road safety programs covering 3.3 billion people. In 2024, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for revolutionizing public health, education, and the environment.
