About Michael

Michael Coden is a Research Affiliate at the MIT Sloan School of Management and Associate Director of the MIT Interdisciplinary Consortium for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity (CAMS). He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1967, a Master of Science in Business Administration from Columbia University in 1975, and a Master of Science in applied mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University in 1979. Coden is also an (ISC)² Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). His research interests center on metricizing cybersecurity risks and actions to quantify costs, benefits, and return on investment for mitigating various cybersecurity threats. This work employs system dynamics modeling, data analytics, and accident prevention theory to formulate optimal strategies for cybersecuring critical infrastructure.

Coden co-founded CAMS in 2014 and serves as its Associate Director. He is a Senior Advisor at BCG Platinion, bringing over 30 years of expertise in cybersecurity strategy, organization, processes, technologies, research, product design, and markets across global industries and public sectors. He contributed to the development of the U.S. NIST Cybersecurity Framework through collaboration with the White House, earning a letter of appreciation for his leadership. Coden edited the ISA/IEC-62443 Cybersecurity Standard and Technical Report. He holds 16 patents related to fiber optic device design, secure network technologies, and secure data protocols. Coden has authored numerous scholarly articles and the book 'The Fiber Optic LAN Handbook,' with a circulation exceeding 100,000 copies. He serves as vice president of NextNine Inc., a cybersecurity software company, and has delivered presentations at major international conferences. His contributions include advising corporate boards, C-suite executives, governments, and industry associations on cyber strategy, incident response, and business continuity. Honors received include the Award of Merit from the Laser Institute of America and the American Chemical Society.
