About Michael

Michael M. Crow is the sixteenth president of Arizona State University, a position he has held since July 2002. He also serves as Regents Distinguished President, professor in the School of Public Affairs within the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, and holds the Arizona State University Foundation Leadership Chair and professorship in Science and Technology Policy. Crow received his Ph.D. in Public Administration, specializing in Science and Technology Policy, from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1985, and his B.A. in Political Science and Environmental Studies from Iowa State University in 1977. His career includes key roles at Columbia University as Executive Vice Provost, founding director of the Earth Institute, and chief strategist for research enterprise development. Previously, he held positions at Iowa State University, including Director of the Office of Science Policy and Research.

Crow's academic interests center on science and technology policy, knowledge enterprises, and the design of higher education systems. Notable publications include co-authored books such as "Designing the New American University" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2015), "The Fifth Wave: The Evolution of the American Research University" (2020), and forthcoming works like "Universities in Service to the Nation: Democratizing American Education" (2025). He has contributed articles to Issues in Science and Technology, Daedalus, and other journals. Under his leadership, Arizona State University has seen research expenditures increase eightfold to over $1 billion annually, enrollment exceed 181,000 students, and the establishment of innovative transdisciplinary schools and institutes. Crow has been honored with the 2025 Edison Achievement Award, 2024 TIME100 Climate List, election to the American Philosophical Society, and fellowships in prestigious organizations including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
