Associate Professor Michael Falster is an Associate Professor and Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellow in the Medicines Intelligence Research Program at the School of Population Health, UNSW Sydney, where he leads the Cardiometabolic Medicines Research Stream and serves as Deputy Director of Research. He holds a PhD from UNSW Sydney (2017), a Master of Biostatistics from the University of Sydney (2011), and a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) from UNSW Sydney (2005). His research employs population-level linked data and advanced analytics in pharmacoepidemiology and biostatistics to examine quality, use, and outcomes of care in the Australian health system, with a particular emphasis on cardiometabolic medicines, multimorbidity, and disparities in access and treatment.
Falster leads NHMRC- and Heart Foundation-funded programs investigating variation in care, including post-hospital treatment decisions for cardiovascular medicines and disparities between public and privately funded patients. His work has informed national health performance indicators, primary care models, and linked data assets. He has received awards including the UNSW Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Research by a Higher Degree Research Student (2017), the Health Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand Best PhD Student Prize (2016), and recognition for top-cited articles. Falster contributes to advisory groups such as those for the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.
