Great Professor!
Professor Michael Fulham serves as Clinical Professor in the Central Clinical School of Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney and Adjunct Professor in the School of Information Technologies within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies. He obtained his MBBS with Honours from the University of New South Wales in 1979 and holds Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). Following training in internal medicine and neurology in Australia, he undertook a five-year research fellowship in neuroimaging using PET and MRI at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
Since returning to Australia in 1993, Fulham has been instrumental in advancing molecular imaging at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH), where he directs the Department of Molecular Imaging, serves as Senior Staff Neurologist, and acts as Clinical Director for Medical Imaging at Sydney Local Health District (SLHD). He spearheaded the translation of PET and PET-CT from research to routine clinical use for cancer assessment in Australia, serving as Chief Investigator for the nation's only NH&MRC-funded randomized controlled trial evaluating PET's clinical utility. His academic interests encompass neuroimaging computing, oncology imaging, neurodegenerative disorders, brain tumors, and the integration of machine learning in medical image analysis and diagnostics. Fulham has authored over 170 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, contributing to grants totaling more than $7 million since 1996. Key publications include "Adapted treatment guided by interim PET-CT scan in advanced Hodgkin’s lymphoma" (New England Journal of Medicine, 2016), "Safety and activity of microRNA-loaded minicells in patients with recurrent malignant pleural mesothelioma" (The Lancet Oncology, 2017), "Multimodal neuroimaging feature learning for multiclass diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease" (IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2015), "Mapping of brain tumor metabolites with proton MR spectroscopic imaging: clinical relevance" (Radiology, 1992), and "A critical appraisal of prevalence and metabolic significance of brown adipose tissue in adult humans" (American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2010). He maintains an active clinical practice in neurology.
