Michael Moore is Professor of Psychology in the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University, where he also serves as Director of the PhD Program in Clinical Psychology. A native of Centereach, Long Island, he earned his B.A. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2000, M.A. from Kent State University in 2005, and Ph.D. from Kent State University in 2009. After completing his doctorate, Moore taught at Jackson State University, a historically Black institution in Mississippi. He joined the faculty at Adelphi University around 2013, advancing to associate professor before his promotion to full professor. In October 2023, he was unanimously approved by the faculty to succeed Laura Brumariu as director of the clinical psychology doctoral program, a position in which he seeks to champion diversity and inclusion in training future psychologists.
Moore's scholarly work centers on cognitive and affective processes that contribute to depression and anxiety disorders, encompassing depressive realism, attributional style, decentering, emotion regulation, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, empathy, psychotherapeutic processes, and psychometrics. He specializes in cognitive behavioral therapies. His extensive publication record includes "Depressive realism: A meta-analytic review" (2012), "Initial Psychometric Properties of the Experiences Questionnaire: Validation of a Self-Report Measure of Decentering" (2007), "Association between Decentering and Reductions in Relapse/Recurrence in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression in Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial" (2022), "A Meta-Analytic Review of the Relations Between Anxiety and Empathy" (2023), "Facial emotion recognition in major depressive disorder: A meta-analytic review" (2021), "The Counseling Relationship Assessment Measure (CRAM): Initial Validation and Psychometric Properties" (2026), and "Parental emotion socialization and internalizing problems in childhood and adolescence: A meta-analytic review" (2025). With more than 6,600 citations on Google Scholar and 69 research items on ResearchGate, Moore's contributions have had considerable impact on clinical psychology. He actively collaborates with students and colleagues on empirical studies, including meta-analyses exploring how affective empathy relates to anxiety risk and the role of decentering in preventing depressive relapse.
