Professor Michael Nicholl serves as Clinical Professor in the Central Clinical School - Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Neonatology at the University of Sydney and Adjunct Professor since August 2022. He obtained his MBBS from the University of Sydney in 1983, PhD in Medicine from the University of Sydney in 2004, and MBA (Public Sector Management) from Charles Sturt University. His qualifications include FRANZCOG (Rtd), FRCOG, FCHSM, and FAAQHC.
Nicholl has a distinguished career spanning over 40 years in clinical practice, leadership, and health administration, specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology. Key appointments include Clinical Director, Division of Women’s, Children’s and Family Health at Royal North Shore Hospital (2004-2022), Clinical Director, Maternity Neonatal and Women’s Health Network, Northern Sydney Local Health District (2006-2022), and Senior Clinical Advisor Obstetrics, NSW Health (2008-2022). Currently, he is Chief Executive of the Clinical Excellence Commission (since 2022). He was President of Women’s Healthcare Australasia (2013-2019) and board member (2010-2022). He received the iCare (TMF) NSW Public Sector Risk Leadership Award in 2017.
His research contributions appear in peer-reviewed publications on obstetrics and maternal health, including "Experiences of antenatal care practices to reduce stillbirth: surveys of women and healthcare professionals pre-post implementation of the Safer Baby Bundle" (2024), "Pregnancy-associated gynecological cancer in New South Wales, 2001-2019: a population-based cohort study" (2023), "Pregnancy associated cancer, timing of birth and clinical decision making: a population-based cohort study" (2023), and "Uptake of external cephalic version for term breech presentation: a population-based study" (2017). These studies address stillbirth prevention, pregnancy outcomes, and maternal care.
