Dr Michael Potterton is a lecturer and Associate Professor in the Department of History at Maynooth University. His core field of research is the history and archaeology of medieval Ireland, with special reference to landscape and settlement – urban, rural and hinterlands. He completed a BA (International) in Archaeology and French at University College Dublin and a PhD in History at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. His doctoral research focused on medieval Trim, Co. Meath, and was published as the book Medieval Trim: history and archaeology in 2005. Prior to his current role, he worked as Senior Research Archaeologist with the Discovery Programme on the Medieval Rural Settlement Project and served as Senior Editor at Four Courts Press from 2009 to 2015. He has taught at Maynooth University, NUI Galway, University College Dublin, the Sorbonne and the University of Toronto, and has presented research in nine countries. Potterton has published thirteen books as author, co-author or co-editor, including The Dublin Region in the Middle Ages (2010) with Margaret Murphy, and has organised multiple conferences and received fifteen competitively awarded scholarships and grants. He is a board member of the Irish Historic Towns Atlas, a committee member of the International Commission for the History of Towns, and serves on the editorial boards of the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy and the Journal of Irish Archaeology. In 2011 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He is Principal Investigator on the Moynagh Lough Project and has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications and edited volumes on medieval settlement, Renaissance Ireland and town-country relations.
